US Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Global Tariffs in 6–3 Ruling

21 February 2026

The Supreme Court of the United States, in a 6–3 ruling on February 20, struck down Donald Trump’s global tariffs, saying he exceeded powers under the IEEPA (1977).

The Court held that the US Constitution grants tariff and taxing powers exclusively to Congress, not the President, invalidating broad tariffs imposed since February 2025.

Legal challenges were filed by businesses and 12 US states; Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.

Over $133 billion had been collected from the disputed tariffs by late 2025, with total receipts estimated to reach $175 billion.

Sector-specific duties (e.g., steel and aluminium tariffs) remain intact, while broader reciprocal tariffs introduced since February 2025 stand invalidated.
