India Tightens Solid Waste Rules to Boost Sustainability Credentials
India notified new Solid Waste Management Rules on Jan 27, 2026, effective April 1, 2026, covering textile and garment units.
Bulk generators (≥20,000 sq m or ≥100 kg/day) must segregate waste into 4 streams and use authorised collectors.
Non-recyclable waste ≥1,500 kcal/kg to be diverted from landfills to RDF / waste-to-energy, with 6% fuel substitution initially.
Compliance will increase costs but improve auditability, landfill diversion and circularity.
The rules enhance India’s standing with EU and US buyers amid rising sustainability scrutiny.
